So what’s this Substack about?

Stories from my childhood and stories about the films I’ve made. This is more memoir than autobiography—with some essays and other posts mixed in to keep things interesting.

What do you write about?

Memory. The past and the present converging. The families we’re born with and the families we choose. Filmmaking. Creativity. Storytelling. That kinda thing.

When I’m writing about a conversation that happened when I was a kid, is it exactly what was said? Probably not, but It’s to the best of my memory. I’ve also changed the names of some folks from the past, changed details to protect their identities or combined several characters into one character to condense time.

So that’s the creative license I’m taking with these stories. And if you don’t like that sort of thing, please send all complaints to David Sedaris.

What should I know about you?

I’m a documentary filmmaker. Our latest film SATAN WANTS YOU is a feature documentary about the story that ignited the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. 

But before I started making films, I was a writer. My first book for a publisher was Made Beautiful By Use. I’ve written for newspapers, magazines, blogs, television shows, and politicians.

In between the writing and the filmmaking, I hosted two seasons of a Canadian reality show about queer people doing queer things.
